Long-term effects of land application of poultry manure on crop production, and soil and water quality under a corn-soybean rotation system in Iowa

چکیده
In recent years, the poultry industry has seen a steady growth in Iowa. With the increase in the broiler and egg industry, the public is concerned about the potential threat to environmental quality (surface and subsurface water and air quality) from increased volumes of poultry manure. Although the effect of poultry manure on crop production has been studied, its effects on water quality, under corn and soybean rotation, in Iowa have not been extensively studied. Therefore, a long-term study was initiated in 1998 to investigate the impacts of poultry manure on crop production and environmental quality (soil and water quality). This thesis will present the results of this eight year study (1998 to 2005) on land application of poultry manure on (i) crop yields and crop quality; (ii) subsurface drain water quality, and (iii) soil quality. Eleven experimental field plots of sizes varying from 0.14 to 0.4 ha were used in this study. Each field plot was drained by a single subsurface drain line passing through the center of the plot. These subsurface drain lines were intercepted at the end of the plot to collect water samples for water quality analyses. Corn and soybeans were planted in the same plot with corn on half of the plot and soybean on the other half. Only the corn side received the N fertilizer (poultry manure or Urea Ammonium Nitrate, UAN). Subsurface drain water samples were collected weekly during the growing season (MarchOctober) and analyzed for NO3-N and PO4-P concentration. Soil samples were collected before planting and after harvesting each year and analyzed for NO3-N and PO4-P at 5 different depths of the soil profile. Corn stalk samples were also collected after harvest at the height of 20-25 cm from the ground and analyzed for nitrogen concentration. Two application rates of poultry manure (168 kg-N/ha and 336 kg-N/ha) and one application rate of UAN (168 kg-N/ha) were applied in split plot design with unbalance replications. A check

Corn yield and yield stability under varying nutrient management, crop rotation, and rainfall
Long-term yield performance and yield stability of common cropping systems needs to be simultaneously assessed at various fertility regimes. Based on a consecutive 19-year field trial, including eight fertilization treatments with different combinations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and recycled manure (RM), the effects of fertilization and crop rotation on corn (Zea mays L.) y...
متن کاملEffects of liquid swine manure applications on NO3–N leaching losses to subsurface drainage water from loamy soils in Iowa
Long-term applications of organic or inorganic sources of N to croplands can increase the leaching potential of nitrate– nitrogen (NO3–N) for soils underlain by subsurface drainage ‘‘tile’’ network. A field study was conducted for 6 years (1993– 1998) to determine the effects of liquid swine manure and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution fertilizer applications on NO3–N concentrations and NO3–...
متن کاملEmpirical analysis and prediction of nitrate loading and crop yield for corn–soybean rotations
Nitrate nitrogen losses through subsurface drainage and crop yield are determined by multiple climatic and management variables. The combined and interactive effects of these variables, however, are poorly understood. Our objective is to predict crop yield, nitrate concentration, drainage volume, and nitrate loss in subsurface drainage from a corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Mer...
متن کاملManures behave similar to superphosphate in phosphorus accumulation in long-term field soils
Repeated application of manures to agricultural soils could cause the accumulation of phosphorus (P) in soils. However, it is unclear if manure P can behave similar to P in soluble fertilizers in accumulation Olsen-P (0.5 mol L-1 NaHCO3 at pH 8.5) in soils. A long-term wheat-maize rotation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of repeated application of manures on P accumulation i...

The objective of this study was to explore if more crop-specific plant growth modules can improve simulations of crop yields, and N in tile flow under different management practices compared with a generic plant growth module. We calibrated and evaluated the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) with the Decision Support for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT v3.5) plant growth modules (RZWQM–DSSAT...
